Our island

Skopelos is an island of the Northern Sporades, with an area of 95.5 square kilometres, with rich vegetation and emerald waters, on heavenly beaches.It has three main ports, Skopelos, Agnontas and Glossa, which are connected to the ports of Volos, Thessaloniki, Mantoudiou, Kymi, Skiathos and Alonissos.

A popular destination for peaceful and carefree holidays, famous for the filming of the musical “Mamma Mia”. It is a green island where the pine trees almost touch the turquoise waters of the sea. That is why on 5/7/97 it was officially declared a green and blue island by the International Biopolitical Organization, as most of its area is covered by virgin pine forest, more than 70%.

Skopelos Chora is amphitheatrically built above the harbour and by presidential decree since 1978, it has been classified as a traditional settlement due to its architectural structure.

Its ancient name was Peparithos, after the son of Dionysus and Ariadne. In the capital of the island you can visit the old Venetian Castle, the Folklore Museum, the old Bishopric, the house of the writer Pavlos Nirvanas, the Mansion of Vakratsa and the Ancient Asclepius in Abeliki, which is considered the oldest in the Aegean.

A stroll through the picturesque alleys of the island can be combined with shopping from shops selling traditional folk art, handmade ceramics, jewellery, clothes and other decorative items. 

In the field of entertainment there are many choices, with many of the island’s cafes and bars having a special and unique character, while one can enjoy great food in the many taverns and restaurants of the island. Typically, one can taste the traditional twisted cheese pie, honey with nuts, doughnuts, almond cakes, almond cakes, spoon sweets, plums, goat stew, fresh fish and much more.

 

Apart from Chora, it is worth visiting the other picturesque settlements of the island, Elios-Neo Klima, Old Klima and Glossa with the port of Loutraki. As well as the many monasteries and chapels, more than 365 in total, indicatively the Monastery of Evangelistria, the Metamorphosis of Savior, the Monastery of Prodromos, Agia Barbara, Agios Taxiarchis and Agia Anna, which are located in the area of Mount Palouki opposite Chora, as well as the Holy Monastery and the patron saint of Skopelos Bishop Agios Riginos, 3km from the main port.

By car, motorbike or bus that runs regularly, you can visit and swim in the wonderful beaches of the island, such as Glisteri and Agios Konstantinos or Glyfoneri on the north side of the island, as well as the most popular ones in the southwestern part: Stafylos, Velanio, Cape Amarantos, Agnontas, Limnonari, Panormos, Andrinis, Milia, Kastani, Ftelia, Hovolo, Elios-Neo Klima, Paraiso Beach Bar, Kalyves-Armenopetra, Agios Ioannis in Kastri, Chontosiorgis, Perivoliou, Loutraki. There are also many deserted and quiet beaches along the entire island that can be reached by boat or by renting a boat, as well as by hiking along beautiful paths.

 

It is also possible to make excursions or day cruises to the surrounding islands of Skiathos and Alonissos, as well as to the Alonissos Marine Park where the Mediterranean monk seal Monachus Monachus, one of the two remaining seal species of the phocid family and one of the rarest mammals in Europe, lives. Finally, some of the activities that can be chosen and enjoyed during the stay are hiking, cycling, diving, sailing, sea kayaking, sup, water sports and boat trips, either individually or organized in groups.
